Hand-Thrown Grinding Bowl, Deep
An unglazed pestle and mortar with two pouring spouts, hand-thrown for us in iron-rich stoneware by Symy Ong, a mile or so from the Objects of Use store. Perfect for milling spices and dried herbs, or preparing dressing and sauces. Use by rolling the pestle around the grinding bowl in a circular motion. Trained at Clay College, Stoke-On-Trent, Ong then undertook an apprenticeship at Mitoh Gama (Kiln) in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. She often uses a kick wheel to impart a rhythm that is completely dictated by the body to her work. Ong recently set up studio in Oxford, making stoneware pieces which are fired in a gas kiln. Diameter 12cm, spout to spout 13.5cm, height 6.5cm.
