Sperm whale knife (A)
Legend has it that these knives were conceived when the smith and sickle maker Tetsu Yamashita was asked to make a round ended knife that might be used by children to learn the proper sharpening of pencils. To this end he created the sperm whale knife which was greeted with such delight and success it became the first of a series of craft knives all based on differing whale forms. Handmade in Tosa, Kōchi Prefecture, and despite their playful appearance forged and ground with an exceptional laminated edge. Knife 'A' in the form of a sperm whale measures approximately 160mm by 35mm, whilst knife 'B' a minke whale measures about 170mm by 40mm.
