Sarpaneva casserole

Created by Timo Sarpaneva in 1960, but drawing its shape and functionality from ancient Finnish folk traditions, the Sarpaneva casserole has become acclaimed as an archetypal product of scandinavian modernism and humanist design. Elegant, clean, beautifully made, gratifyingly utile, yet somehow retaining the delight of surprise; recalling, too, the forest, the mountain homestead, Peer Gynt or the brothers Grimm, something of the fairytale, the warmth of a fire and shelter from the wild. So beloved in its native land has this pot become that in 1998 it was issued as part of a set of 6 stamps commemorating the best of Finnish design. Cast iron, white enamelled interior 3 litre capacity.
