Toison d’Or or Versatil clutch pencils
£2.25 – £4.75
Heavy bodied, black in the case of the Toison d’Or, or yellow for the Versatil, lacquered clutch pencils supplied with pocket clips and sharpeners secured inside the push button top. During the Napoleonic wars a continental shortage of high quality Cumbrian graphite pushed Joseph Hardtmuth to develop a pencil lead made from powdered graphite mixed with clay and in so doing created the very first modern pencil. Today the the company he founded maintains his legacy in the production of traditional and mechanical pencils, in České Budějovice, Czech Republic.
