A hand-shaped butter knife, cut from alder wood. Alder is a relatively soft hardwood of medium density, traditionally used for kitchen utensils. Handmade by the craftspeople of a Finnish visually impaired workers cooperative, whose long tradition of hand brush manufacture throughout the northern Europe has helped preserve skills which might otherwise long since have vanished.
