Ibazen Urushi Lacquered Magnetic Paper Holder
A fuki-urushi lacquered sakura (Japanese cherry) strip, embedded with magnets. Position metal screws in the wall to meet the magnets in the strip, creating a beautifully simple method for hanging paper posters or lists on the wall, easily changed at will. Made entirely by the hand of Iba Takahito in Biei City, close to Asahikawa amongst the forests and highlands of Hokkaido. Coated with seven layers of natural urushi lacquer — the sap of Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Japanese sumac) — each requiring a minimum of 24 hours curing in a humidity and temperature controlled chamber. Approximately 30cm long, 12mm high, and around 5cm deep.
