Mailänder scythe stone
A natural canoe shaped stone cut from a quarry near Milan. About 400 grit with a high carborundum content this is a fairly soft but fast cutting stone polished on three sides but left unfinished upon the forth - a side which can still be used especially upon larger or curved blades and agricultural tools. Can be used with either oil or water (but not both - a throughly dried out water-stone could be converted to oil, but never the reverse) although traditionally this type of European stone would have been used almost exclusively with oil alone. About 24cm.
