Finnish knot stick or pain hook
A traditional Finnish somewhat curious looking fire formed rattan hook with a hand carved grip used for reaching backwards over ones shoulder to press out and massage knots amidst the muscles of the upper back. Rattan is a kind of climbing palm or vine the cultivation of which is being encouraged by some conservationists as a means of preserving the forest growth on which it thrives. Obviously the commercialisation of any old growth forest is to varying degrees problematic, but rattan is being utilised as a means to prevent the far more devastating logging that would otherwise occur. Approximately 38cm by 18cm.
