Kurume Kasuri Folding Fan with Pouch, Ichigma Navy
£75.00
A beautifully patterned Japanese folding fan, constructed from a combination of bamboo and deep blue Kasuri fabric. Perfect for cooling down on hot summer days, sending complex messages to prospective suitors, drying the face of toners and unguents, or as a beautiful decoration for the home. The oldest surviving wood strip fan (Hi-ogi) was found in Nara City, Japan, and dates from the 7th century. Kaseru is an iteration of a traditional South Asian dyeing technique, where patterns are dyed into threads before weaving, rather than being printed onto the finished product. This creates the characteristic blurred effect. Kurume-kasuri is a form of this process specifically from Kurume City, Fukuoka prefecture. Okamoto recommend care be taken with the fabric with heavy friction and excessive moisture, as ink transfer may occur! 21cm in length.
