Kurume Kasuri 100% Cotton Japanese Scarf, Ochre
£75.00

A beautiful, surprisingly soft, lightweight shawl or scarf made from a cotton weave using the traditional ‘Kasuri’ process, from the word kasureru, meaning ‘blurring’. Perfect for summer evenings or temperate spring and fall days — providing an extra layer of coverage with unique style and unparalleled quality. This shawl in particular features an incredible show of Kasuri craftsmanship with a rich "Karashi" or mustard coloured weave with indigo dots. Kasuri is an iteration of an ancient technique, where patterns are dyed into threads before weaving rather than printed onto the finished product. The result is a characteristic 'blurry' or bleeding look to patterns of this make. Kurume-kasuri is a form of this process specifically from Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The technique is recognised as an important, intangible folk cultural property of Japan and requires over thirty painstaking, handmade steps to achieve the final product. Take care around moisture and friction, as colour transfer of dyes may occur. Measures 38cm in width with a total length of 200cm. Composed of 96% Cotton and 4% Nylon.
