Mouth blown silvered baubles, 5cm
£15.50

Traditionally silvered glass baubles for hanging upon fir trees at Christmas time. These mouth blown baubles come from small lamp workshops in Lauscha, Germany, the town where in 1847 Hans Greiner was credited with their invention, and where the blowing of Christmas ornaments, lamp-working of glass eyes, animals, even medical equipment, still exists as an almost cottage industry. The silvered baubles are made using traditional mirroring techniques, by swilling their insides with a silver-nitrate/sugar based solution which upon evaporation deposits silver onto the warm glass, and are by necessity fitted with tin and sprung wire hanging crowns. A box of 5 x 5cm diameter baubles.
