It is often translated as homeland, home, or community - it is the place where one feels at home, feels a sense of belonging. Set amongst the German Alps the Hohenfried Heimat is precisely this, a home, a sustainable community of learning disabled individuals, incorporating schools, social facilities, training, and employment. It is in their own wood workshops that the 'Greiflinge' (clutching) toys are produced to Hugo Kuekelhaus's original 1930's designs. Made of local timber, and finished only in pure vegetable oils they really are beautifully made, technically impressive, and an absolute joy to hold and manipulate for both children and adults alike.
