Like petrified bubbles, and capturing no small share of their evanescent beauty. These mouth blown baubles come from small lamp workshops in Lauscha, Germany, the town where in 1847 Hans Greiner was credited with their invention, and where the blowing of Christmas ornaments, lamp-working of glass eyes, animals, even medical equipment, still exists as an almost cottage industry. The silvered baubles are made using traditional mirroring techniques, by swilling their insides with a silver-nitrate/sugar based solution which upon evaporation deposits silver onto the warm glass, and are by necessity fitted with tin and sprung wire hanging crowns. The silvered and clear baubles are suppled in packs of 5 of about 5cm diameter, or 3 of 8cm, whilst the red baubles, made of expensive gold containing ruby glass are sold individually.
